The Kenyan champions are headed to the Elite 16 after finishing second in Group D qualifiers held in Kibaha, Tanzania
Ahead of their debut in the Road to BAL (Basketball Africa League) Elite 16, Nairobi City Thunder have bolstered their squad, signing 2022 BAL Defensive Player of the Year Ater James Majok (AJ).
AJ bagged silver in the inaugural BAL season in 2021 with Tunisians US Monastir, a side he has played for in the premier African men's club competition for three of the four seasons held so far. They lifted the 2022 title, Majok making the All-BAL first team.

City Thunder eye second win in Tanzania in Road to BAL 2025
The flamboyant Thunder tipped off their campaign with a comfortable 89-53 victory over Seychellois side Beau Vallon and a second victory against the highly fancied Burundians will give them a much needed boost in their top two ambitions.
Urunani have picked back to back wins so far, after thrashing Vallon 112-43 to go 2-0 up after earlier on outwitting hosts JKT 83-60.
Thunder know their work is well cut out against the Burundians, who have heavily recruited for the Road to BAL 2025, and an eye on the next round, the Elite 16.
Captain Tyler Ongwae believes the team has picked up well after the jitters of the first game, where despite winning, they felt they didn’t do as much as they would have wanted.

Road to BAL: American-Nigerian 'UC' on what Nairobi City Thunder need to qualify
Nairobi City Thunder (NCT) are raring to go as the East Division Group D Road to BAL (Basketball Africa League) matches get underway on Wednesday 16 October in Kibaha, Tanzania.
The Division has been split into two with Group E matches being played in Zimbabwe from Tuesday 22 to Sunday 27 October. The top two sides in each Group advance to the Elite 16 set for Johannesburg from Tuesday 12 November.
Thunder goes up against Seychelles' Beau Vallon Heat, Burundi's Urunani, GNBC of Madagascar and hosts JKT playing in a round-robin format.

Ibs happy with City Thunder's preseason, but...
After more than a month of training together, Nairobi City Thunder head coach Brad Ibs is pleased with the team chemistry achieved so far.
City Thunder have signed six new players who have featured in their two friendly matches so far, winning both in the last one month.
The six include Kenyans Tylor Okari Ongwae, Eugene Adera, Derrick Mekenye Ogechi and Tom Bush Wamukota. Others are Nigerian Uchenna Onyekachi Iroegbu, and American William Sidney Davis II.
Ibs feels the new players have settled in pretty fast, a signal of inspiring performances once the season kicks off proper.

Finley tips Thunder to secure historic BAL qualification
NBA Kenya operations lead, Michael Finley, has tipped Nairobi City Thunder to cruise through the Basketball Africa League (BAL) 2025 qualifiers slated for Tuesday to Sunday in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
This will mark the fifth edition of the BAL qualifiers, organised by FIBA Africa, as teams from across the continent battle for a coveted spot in the prestigious 12-team tournament.
Since the tournament’s inception in 2021, no Kenyan team has gone beyond the preliminary round.
They include Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) in 2021, 2023 and 2024 and Ulinzi Warriors in 2022.

Nairobi City Thunder outplay Beau Vallon in Road to BAL debut
KIBAHA(Tanzania) - William Sydney Davis II 'Will' combined with Uchenna Iroegbu, each posting a double-double to propel Road to BAL debutants Nairobi City Thunder to their first victory in a 89-53 show over Seychelles' Beau Vallon Heat.
This was the opening match of East Division's Group D, a group that has attracted five teamss.
Will dropped a game-high of 26 points, adding 11 rebounds while American-Nigerian guard Iroegbu posted a rare one with 10 points and 11 rebounds for victory.
The initial stages of the match were a see-saw with the Islanders taking an early 7-2 lead. The Kenyan side clawed back to level the score at seven, Derrick Ogechi giving them the lead for the first time from behind the arc for 10-7.

Nairobi City Thunder's Road to BAL journey revealed
Reigning Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) champions Nairobi City Thunder will begin their continental sojourn on 15-20 October, when they participate in the Road to BAL East Division group phase qualifiers in Kibaha, Tanzania.
The 2023-24 season champions are making their first appearance in the tournament, which offers them a route towards making next year’s Basketball Africa League finals.

American Forward Davis: I Was Pleasantly Surprised When I Started Practice With Nairobi City Thunder
American power forward William Sydney Davis hopes his experience playing across various leagues, including the NBA G League, will be a vital addition to Kenyan side Nairobi City Thunder, as they seek success in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) next year.
Davis, who can also play as a center, was signed by the Kenyan Basketball Federation (KBF) Premier League side as part of their squad for the Road to BAL 2025.

Nairobi City Thunder head coach Brad Ibs has backed his charges to replicate the form they showed during the regular season when the Kenya National Basketball Men’s Premier League enters the playoffs stage this Sunday at Nyayo Gymnasium. The ShaurI Moyo based side, who finished the regular season unscathed, will launch their quest for the title in the quarter-finals against the University of Nairobi’s Terror on Sunday in Game One before playing Game Two and Three the following weekend.

Thunder’s Tyler Okari: Defense Will Win Us Games at the Very Competitive Basketball Africa League
Nairobi City Thunder will start their campaign to play at the NBA-backed Basketball Africa League (BAL) for the first time with the East Division qualifiers, which are scheduled for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from October 15-20.
The Kenyan champions will take on hosts Jeshi la Kujenga Taifa (JKT), Ethiopia’s Hawassa City, Beau Vallon of The Seychelles, Ushindzi of Comoros, Urunani of Burundi and GNBC of Madagascar in battling for only two slots available to qualify for the Elite 16.
Small forward Tyler Okari, a new signing from German side Niners Chemnitz, believes they can go all the way to win the Division and progress to the next round. But, he says, based on his experience, they need to be tight defensively.

High-flying Nairobi City Thunder assistant coach Sadat Gaya is wary of the threat posed by former champions the Ulinzi Warriors. The two giants meet in an epic Kenya National Basketball League clash at Nyayo Stadium gymnasium today at 8 pm. “We play an inconsistent Ulinzi team that has been up and down throughout the season,” Gaya noted. “In my experience, this is a dangerous type of team. We are prepared for them, but you can never be too prepared. I love our chances against them.”

With five seconds to play, Equity’s new signing, Eugene Adera scaled for a lay-up, but saw the ball agonizingly bounce off the rim, with a three-point margin to cover. Equity then won a foul and a side-ball from the restart, asked for a time-out with three seconds to go as they tried to rally back.

Leaders Nairobi City Thunder coach Sadat Gaya said his charges were nowhere near their best despite an 82-56 win over USIU Tigers in a Kenya National Basketball League match. Thunder, the only unbeaten team so far, have a maximum 28 points from 14 games. They led 20-13 in the first quarter but trailed 20-17 in the second.

Kenya Morans Albert Odero has joined Nairobi City Thunder. Odero was Morans' best player at the FIBA AfroBasket Qualifiers 2025 in Tunisia over the weekend. He led Kenya’s scoring chart in the three qualifiers in Monastir, scoring 25 points in the 90-69 loss to hosts Tunisia, had 12 in the defeat against Angola and managed 19 in their 80-74 win against Guinea in Group E’.

League champions Thunder pack up squad with three foreign additions
Thunder have brought on board American Power forward William Sydney Davis from the NBA G-League side Ignite as well as Nigerian point guard Uchenna Iroegbu who has been playing in Qatar.
Also joining Thunder, who have already commenced training, is Senegalese power forward Michael Diouf who is the Europe Cup all-time points leader. The 35-year old has featured for Dannish side Bakken Bears from 2015 to early this year.
He played alongside Kenyan international Tuler Ongwae, who has also joined Thunder for their BAL campaign. He is a four-time Dannis defender of the year, and was the Dannis MVP finals in 2021.

Kenya’s representatives to the Basketball Africa League (BAL), Nairobi City Thunder, have signed a galaxy of international professional players, led by former NBA player William Sidney Davis II, to bolster their preparations for the prestigious continental title.
Thunder, the first Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) professional club, recently triumphed in the KBF Premier League playoff final against Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) with victories of 73-70, 59-50, and 86-48. This success qualified them for the BAL qualifiers, scheduled to begin the week of October 20.
